Item #T-106: The Susquehanna Detour Extravaganza

Run time: 150 Minutes

The NYS&W railroad has proven, time and again, that it can "step up" to help other area class I railroads in time of need. With the upgrades to the line including: new ties, new ballast, and new rail in recent years, combined with the CNYK upgrades to the Southern Tier as per lease agreement, and the take over of the Hudson Secondary by the MNJ, the infrastructure has been improved upon significantly. This allows for increased speeds and greater safety of movements along the line. If these improvements were in place 8 years ago, in the days when CSX planned to re-route Q-403 and Q-404 on a long term basis, we might still be seeing those trains operating daily, today.

Highlights include:

  1. CSX detour of Q-108, the result of a major derailment near Amsterdam, NY

  2. Detour of Norfork Southern train 13T, the result of a crew shortage out of the Binghamton terminal in upstate New York. This train was routed down the Southern Tier instead of taking its normal routing down the Subury subdivision

  3. Detour of CSX Q-156 on Labor Day, 2012 due to signal and track work on the Mohawk subdivision outside of Selkirk yard in upstate New York

  4. Most recently, the detour of CSX trains Q-156, Q-003, and a K unit crude oil train due to track and signal work in upstate New York during Memorial day weekend, 2013

Item #T-105: Susquehanna 2010-2011: Severe Weather Edition

Run time: 131 Minutes

2009, 2010, and 2011 brought some severe weather to the north-east region. This title chronicles the operations of the NYS&W (and other railroads such as CSX, Metro North, and New Jersey Transit as well) after catastrophic floods, heavy snowfall, and the aftermath of Hurricane Irene - a "100 year storm" that was only to be topped the very next year by SuperStorm Sandy (not featured in this title).

Highlights include:

  1. The running of the 2nd annual NYS&W "Toys for Tots" military train special in bitter cold temperatures and icy road conditions

  2. Clearing of the southern division mainline after the "Blizzard of 2010"

  3. Various Metro North and New Jersey transit train-set movements over the southern division due to the complete washout of the Southern Tier between Sloatsburg, NY and Harriman, NY. These movements include rescuing and delivering passenger equipment that was due its 90 day inspection, and the running of the consist of the NS HO8 local, which was cut off from its Campbell Hall yard due to catastrophic damage to the Southern Tier.

  4. The result of various crossing protection upgrades along the southern division, most notable at: Utter Ave (Hawthorne, NJ), Park Place (Butler, NJ), Mathews Ave (Bloomingdale, NJ), West Oakland Ave (Oakland, NJ), and Hamburg Turnpike (Riverdale, NJ).

  5. GP18 Swan Song: A tribute to the last footage I have of the GP-18's in service, before being sold off to the East Penn Railroad.

Item #T-104: Susquehanna 2008: From Urbia to Suburbia

Run time: 93 Minutes

The NYS&W railway is, arguably, one of the most scenic in the entire northeast. The scenery is also unique in that it gradually transforms from a heavily urban environment on its eastern terminus, to a heavily suburban (some would even say rural) environment on its journey westward. This title deals with the normal road and local operations of the NYS&W railway as were present in 2008. However, this title is unique in that new areas of the railroad are explored and videoed for your viewing pleasure. Follow an NYS&W train over 200 rail miles all the way from Little Ferry yard limits in Ridgefield Park, NJ to Narrowsburg, NY.

My clips usually show the complete passage of the train, from the first engine, to the last car. Most chapters document the same train in multiple locations; a true "chase". This gradual move shows the scenery change from an urban to a suburban environment.

Highlights include:

  1. A rare autumn Saturday chase of train SU-99 along the Norfolk Southern Hudson Secondary and Southern Tier lines to Narrowsburg, NY.

  2. Footage from new, previously un-shot, areas of the railroad including Paterson, NJ, Sparta, NJ, Jefferson Township, NJ, Bogota, NJ, and various areas in New York and Pennsylvania.

  3. A chase of local train WS-5 after switching the transload facility in Paterson, NJ.

  4. A look at the newly acquired leased local power from CSX and Norfolk Southern.

  5. A tribute to the final in-service days of F-45 engine #3636 (aka: "The Beast").This engine was documented as being "returned to life" in my 2005 volume "From Tri-Weekly to Tri-Daily".
